Padua Muscle Days, Nov 23 - 25

After the satellite meeting in Vienna on October 17th, Prof. Dr. Gnaiger was invited by Prof. Dr. Ugo Carraro (University of Padua) to Padua for a talk on high-resolution respirometry in permeabilized fibers from small biopsies of human muscle.

MCI Forum Technologie & Life Sciences, Innsbruck, Nov 6

In her talk, Mag. Verena Laner will outline the development of the company OROBOROS INSTRUMENTS and will walk you through the early company days up to the current K-Regio Project MitoCom Tyrol. Programme

Satellite Meeting Vienna, Oct 17

Dr. Erich Gnaiger participated at the Satellite Meeting in Vienna, which took place on 17th October.

Attendees of this meeting were Delegates of the University in Padua (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ugo Carraro and Dr. Sandra Zampieri), University in Chieti (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Protasi) and University in Rome (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrea Musaro).

The meeting was organized by Dr. Kern from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute in Vienna.

Standort Lunch Vienna, 2012 Sep 27

Dr. Erich Gnaiger presented the MitoCom project at the Standort Lunch in Vienna, organized by the Standortagentur Tirol. More information.

The article of the STANDORT Tirol you can find in issue no. 15, page 8

Medizintechnikforum Hall, 2012 Sep 20 to 21

OROBOROS INSTRUMENTS exhibited at the Medizintechnikforum Hall, showing latest developments in high-resolution respirometry in combination with the O2k-Fluorescence LED2-Module. MitoCom Tyrol was presented together with the Open Innovation project, both supported by the Government of Tyrol.

Tiroltag, Europäisches Forum Alpbach, 2012 Aug 19

Verena Laner, the project manager of MitoCom Tyrol, took part at the Tirolday, which was the "Opening" of the European Congress in Alpbach 2012. The main topic was "The future of sports in the Alps", which is an integral part of the MitoCom project. Additionally to the presentations and the award presentation ceremony for young scientists, there was a podium discussion with well-known experts such as the famous alpinist Reinhard Messner.

MitoCom Cooperation AltitudeOmics 2012, 2012 July 20 to Aug 13

Dr. Erich Gnaiger participated in the AltitudeOmics2012 project in Bolivia and provided the scientists with two O2ks and his expertise. Aim of the study was to investigate the impacts of hypoxia/acclimatization onto molecular mechanisms of the human cells.

Manuscript accepted for publication in PloS One, March 9

  • "Physical fitness and mitochondrial respiratory capacity in horse skeletal muscle" (by Votion DM, Gnaiger E, Lemieux H, Mouithys-Mickalad A, Serteyn D) was accepted for publication in PloS One.
  • From the anonymous referee's comments:
    • Reviewer #1: "This is an original work performed with state of the art methodologies, as high-resolution respirometry. The results indicate that not only mitochondrial capacity is a limiting factor of horse performance but also the modalities of energy substrate utilization. Horse is an animal of choice for energetic studies since it shows a huge consumption of oxygen during muscle contraction, suggesting an positive adaptation of the mitochondrial system as compared to other animals. .. This article provides new findings on the link between mitochondrial capacity and whole animal body size and aerobic capacity. It also clarifies whether mitochondrial capacity is a controling factor for horse performance. An important finding is also that the control by the phosphorylation system is stable and does not vary with the performance of the horse. In contrast, the relative utilization of complex I versus complex II varies witht he performance, and this is a new finding which adds up to our knowledge of energy regulation. This work is of broad interest for sport physiology, metabolic researchers and aging research."
    • Reviewer #2: "The results could be described in a much easier way if utilizing classical definitions of mitochondrial respiratory parameters (from the late Britton Chance's milestones), such as state IV (or II), state III, uncoupled respiration, respiratory control ratio and so on."
