MiPNet discussion forum: cytochrome c source (2021-07-16)

Question

Cytochrome c (from equine heart) from Sigma Aldrich used in high-resolution respirometry to test the integrity of the mitochondrial outer membrane is currently out of stock for the few months. Does anyone have experience using cytochrome c from another source (e.g. from bovine heart)?

For high-resolution respirometry, we only have experience with the cytochrome c listed on the Bioblast page. For different reasons, we think that it should not be any problem to use cytochrome c from bovine heart. First, cytochrome c is a highly conserved protein across different species, and second, Sigma Aldrich provides the same specifications for C7752 (from equine heart) and C2037 (from bovine heart).
