Media outside the chamber or other spills may get into the mechanical part of the POS connector restricting the operation of the spring mechanism. The outside of the POS connector should therefore be cleaned with pure water from time to time.

Screw the POS head onto the POS connector and make sure its seal (to the connector) is tight. Leave the POS connector attached to the O2k-Main Unit or alternatively make sure that the plug, which connects the POS connector to the O2k-Main Unit, does not get wet (parafilm, or some other form of shielding). This will ensure that only the outside of the POS connector becomes wet. Then rinse the blue plastic of the connector with pure water, working the spring loaded holder several times (similarly to when inserting the connector into the chamber). This will dissolve any media stuck in the mechanical part of the POS connector. After this sort of cleaning, the POS connector should not be used for 1-2 days in order to dry properly.
To do so, screw the OroboPOS head onto the OroboPOS-Connector Make sure that the plug connecting to the O2k-Main Unit does not get wet (protect with parafilm). Rinse the body of the OroboPOS-Connector with distilled water, pulling the spring-loaded part at the base several times. Salt crystals and media clogging the mechanical part are thus washed out. Wipe off the water while again pulling down the spring-loaded part.

Unscrew the POS and check both sides of the electrical connection (the gold pin and thread both on the POS and on the POS connector). Remove any contaminating grease and/or moisture with a fine paper cloth. Soak a paper cloth in ethanol and carefully clean the gold pin and threads. If the gold pin and thread on the POS connector are discoloured or appear stained, repeated cleaning with a paper towel soaked in ethanol may be required. Cleaning should be repeated until a fresh paper towel touching the gold pin and threads remains clean. Finally, apply a drop of contact oil from your [[OroboPOS-Service_Kit|OroboPOS-Service Kit]] to each of the golden pins and threads on POS connector and POS. If you have also done a Sensor service or changed the POS membranes, allow the O2k to run over night before repeating the [[Sensor_test|Sensor test]]. If all service precautions fail to solve the problem, the POS connector should be shipped to our workshop in Austria for a POS Service or a new POS connector has to be used.

Functions

The OroboPOS-Connector has several different functions:
  • It mechanically presses the POS against the glass chamber, ensuring a tight fit.
  • It connects the POS electronically to the Main unit transmitting the signal.
  • In O2k Series A-C it also performs the current to voltage conversion / amplification. For Series D and upwards this function has been incorporated into the Main unit. For this reason OroboPOS connectors for Series A-C and for Series D are NOT interchangeable.
The OroboPOS-Connector is sensitive to damage by ESD when disconnected from the O2k-Main Unit and when the POS head is removed. Further details: MiPNet14.01_ESD-damage.

Cleaning

When experimental media or electrolyte (during service of the polarographic oxygen sensor OroboPOS leak into the mechanical part of the OroboPOS-Connector, operation of the spring mechanism may be restricted. In such cases, the body of the OroboPOS-Connector should be washed with distilled water.

Cleaning the electrical connections

Unscrew the OroboPOS and check the electrical connections (the gold pin and thread on the OroboPOS and OroboPOS-Connector). Remove any contaminating grease and moisture with a fine paper cloth. Soak a paper cloth in ethanol and carefully clean the gold pin and threads. If the gold pin and thread on the POS connector are discoloured or appear stained, clean repeatedly with a paper towel soaked in water and subsequently in ethanol, until no more traces appear on the paper towel used for cleaning. If the O2k is used in a humid environment, apply a drop of contact oil from the OroboPOS-Service Kit to each of the golden pins and threads on POS connector and POS. Perform an O2 sensor test as a quality control of proper OroboPOS-connector and sensor performance.
