Abstract: First, with regard to the comparison of peak exercise oxygen consumption (peak VO2) between individuals with and without obesity, it is established in clinical studies to use peak VO2 indexed to body weight. While skeletal muscle mass contributes more than adipose to peak VO2, equally important are factors such as muscle composition and quality. We have shown that muscle composition, fiber type, quality, mitochondrial content, and capillarization differ substantially between participants with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and healthy control participants. These abnormalities, including those reported in our study,2 cause abnormal oxygen use, including when accounting for lean mass.
