• MiP2014 - Joint IUBMB/MiP Symposium on Mitochondrial Physiology - a Point/Counterpoint Meeting: This MiPconference will cover fundamental aspects of mitochondrial physiology related to genotype/pheotype and structure/function relationships; focus on optimization of experimental protocols and quality control, normalization of mt-function; compare mt-preparations, experimental platforms and tissue/species specific models; networking of national/international organizations.
• MitoGlobal_Events_2014: Check out this year’s emerging list of world-wide mitochondrial events. In case you miss an important mt-event, let us know and it will be included on the list. In the spirit of positive feedback, please refer on your website to the Mitochondrial Global Network.
• MitoPedia Glossary: Malate as substrate in respirometry – inhibitory at higher concentrations. Not only the type but also the concentration of respiratory substrates is important for the design of substrate-uncoupler-inhibitor titration (SUIT) protocols. 0.5 mM malate was saturating CI linked respiration in combination with pyruvate and/or glutamate. Malate inhibited CII linked (succinate+rotenone) and CI+II linked respiration significantly at 2 mM but less at 0.5 mM. This has been documented for mouse heart (collaboration with , liverfish liver and heart homogenates (post IOC80 training course), and brain homogenate preparations, dog permeabilized skeletal muscle fibers (IOC84), beef heart mitochondria, and brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) mitochondria.
