MitoEAGLE Short-Term Scientific Mission
- Motivation letter
- My name is Marisol Fernández Ortiz and I completed a Master of Molecular Biology applied to Biotechnology Companies (BioEnterprise) at the University of Granada with the maximal qualification of High Honors last year. Prior to this, I studied the Degree in Biochemistry at the same University. In this period, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Research Group ‘Biomembranes CTS-236’ in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I of the University of Granada. Here, I acquired knowledge in the field of antitumor compounds through a Contract of Practice and a Fellowship of Introduction to Research within the Project of Excellence entitled ‘Development and evaluation of new antitumor alkylphospholipids that modify intracellular cholesterol homeostasis’. This whole experience was very useful to join to the Research Group ‘CTS-101: Intercellular Communication’, of which I am a member since January of 2016 and where I am currently performing my PhD under the supervision of the Prof. Dario Acuña Castroviejo. My doctoral thesis is supported by a FPU fellowship granted by Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and focused on the study of the mechanism of sarcopenia during aging and the relationship between chronodisruption, melatonin deficit, innate immunity and mitochondrial failure in skeletal and myocardial muscle during aging in mice.
- The applied STSM MitoEAGLE is expected to be a great opportunity to learn new techniques that will be essential for my work. It will be performed according to the MitoFit Coaching Days Innsbruck. Oroboros-team will provide training for quality control in high-resolution respirometry, aimed at standardization of SUIT protocols and fostering proficiency to generate experimental data of assured high quality as required for a data base on mitochondrial physiology. This will highly contribute to the scientific objectives of MitoEAGLE regarding to Research Coordination and Capacity Building. Specifically, the proposed activities will intensify the dissemination of updated knowledge and know-how among partners and improve the collaborative relationships among the participating groups of the Action. The STSM will aid in the standardization and harmonization of protocols that increase the value and reduce the noise in mitochondrial research. The performed experiments will also generate experimental data of assured high quality, as required for a data base on mitochondrial physiology, and provide practical guidelines for students, scientist and stakeholders.
