Abstract: Morphologically homogeneous mitochondria ("large granules") separated from rat liver dispersions by the hypertonic sucrose method of Hogeboom, Schneider, and Pallade contain essentially all the measurable activity of the liver in the oxidation of fatty acids. Likewise, the integrated reactions of the Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle are found in this fraction. Esterification of inorganic phosphate accompanies these oxidations in purified preparations of mitochondria. These bodies have insignificant glycolytic activity. "Mitochondria" prepared by other methods involving saline or water as the dispersing media are inactive in these reactions, possibly because of osmotic damage. • Keywords: mitochondria, liver, fatty acids, trycarboxylic acid cycle
Labels:
Organism: Rat
Tissue;cell: Hepatocyte; Liver"Hepatocyte; Liver" is not in the list (Heart, Skeletal muscle, Nervous system, Liver, Kidney, Lung;gill, Islet cell;pancreas;thymus, Endothelial;epithelial;mesothelial cell, Blood cells, Fat, ...) of allowed values for the "Tissue and cell" property.
Preparation: Isolated Mitochondria"Isolated Mitochondria" is not in the list (Intact organism, Intact organ, Permeabilized cells, Permeabilized tissue, Homogenate, Isolated mitochondria, SMP, Chloroplasts, Enzyme, Oxidase;biochemical oxidation, ...) of allowed values for the "Preparation" property.
